How to Choose an HMI Touch Panel for Your Control Cabinet?

HMI & Components Last updated: 2026-09-20

An HMI is the operator’s window into your machine, so choosing the right size and features matters for usability and long service life.

1. Screen size and resolution

Match the display to the amount of information and the viewing distance. Common sizes are 7, 10 and 15 inches. Higher resolution shows more detail on recipe screens and trend charts.

2. PLC compatibility

Confirm the HMI supports your PLC’s protocol, or that it can communicate over standard Modbus/Ethernet with multiple PLC brands if you use different controllers.

3. Tag capacity and performance

Check how many tags (variables) the HMI supports and its memory for screens and recipes. A project with many alarms and trends needs more capacity.

4. Environment and mounting

Control cabinets are often hot, dusty and subject to washdown. Choose an IP rating that fits the environment (IP65 front is standard) and confirm the panel cut-out size for flush mounting.
